A thermocouple will be found in all gas storage hot water heaters. It usually looks like a very thin copper tube with a probe on one end and can be located underneath the water storage tank in a gas storage hot water system – usually behind a cover panel.
Part of the thermocouple sits in the pilot flame and acts as a sensor to keep the gas supply open. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple will shut off the gas control valve and stop the flow of gas. This is a safety feature to prevent a build-up of unburnt gas.
How do I know if my hot water heater thermocouple is bad?
A faulty thermocouple will stop the flow of gas used to heat your hot water system. You may notice that you are running out of hot water and that your pilot light keeps going out, even after relighting it. These are the most common signs of a faulty thermocouple.
